The EU and the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine are working together to develop the country’s inland water transport infrastructure in line with EU legislation and best practices. The work is done through the technical assistance project ‘Promoting transportation development of the Dnieper River’. The enhancement of river transport will allow Ukraine to increase the volume of freight transportation via inland waterways as a cost-saving alternative to road and rail transport.

The project will focus on the river Dnieper, the largest and most important river in Ukraine. The reforms will include organisation of the river’s public management and financing the maintenance of, and investments in, public water infrastructure. The reforms also aim to promote inland water transport and facilitate the transloading of cargo shipments from road to inland water transport.

The project will help develop the new Inland Water Transport Law and regulatory acts to enhance the capacity of various public institutions to develop inland water transport infrastructure. The project will also help the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine to prepare the country’s Inland Water Transport Development Strategy, the Plan for Transportation Development of the Dnieper River and the long-term Dnieper River Development Plan.
