The Republic of Moldova has started the process of updating its low-emission development strategy by 2030. The strategy will be modified based on the updated, more ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets set in the country’s nationally determined contributions as per the Paris Agreement.

The strategy will be developed with the support of the ‘EU4Climate’ project, which is funded by the EU and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. It will address the main sectors responsible for GHG emissions: energy, industry, agriculture, transport, buildings, forestry and waste management. The strategy will also outline the actions to be taken within these sectors to reach the target of 70% unconditional and 88% conditioned reduction of GHG emissions compared to 1990.

A regional webinar, organised by the ‘EU4Climate’ project from 19 to 20 October,  discussed best practices in developing long-term low-emission development strategies in the EU and the Eastern partner countries.

The event was attended by representatives of the Eastern partner countries, the European Commission, the Energy Community, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, the European Environment Agency, and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations.
