On 27 July, the signing ceremony of seven grant agreements to support the Belarus Water Sector Framework took place at the Ministry of Housing and Communal Services of Belarus. The grants will be used to refurbish the existing wastewater treatment facilities in compliance with national and EU standards, as well as the standards of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM). As a result, the grants will boost the country’s efforts to improve municipal infrastructure investments, which will also have environmental and energy-saving benefits.

The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, head of the EU Delegation to Belarus, and Minister of Housing and Communal Services Andre Khmel. During the meeting, Mr Schuebel commented:

“The European Union will help to modernise wastewater treatment facilities in Baranavičy, Biaroza, Kleck, Liubań, Fanipaĺ, Žlobin and Škloŭ. These projects will improve the essential services to the population and will also result in environmental benefits.“

The total amount of support to be provided to the wastewater treatment project of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is €5.8 million. The grants are provided through two multi-donor funds – the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership and the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership.
